Four Steps to a Slimming Super Bowl Party
The Super Bowl will be here before you know it. Even if you have been cleaning up your diet after the holidays, it can be easy to overindulge and fall off track when celebrating the big game. As you start to plan out your party menu, keep in mind that tailgating snacks don’t have to be unhealthy to be tasty crowd pleasers. Why not surprise your guests this year with finger foods that taste great but are also good for their waistline?
Slimmed Down Super Bowl Strategy #1: Rethink your dip
Chips and dip are standard at almost any celebration, especially when tailgating or celebrating a sporting event. Although a spinach dip may sound healthy, the standard variety made with mayonnaise and cream cheese can pack in around 115 calories in every two tablespoons! If you snack on that throughout the game, you could be well on your way to achieving the body of a linebacker. Instead, a simple swap can cut the calories in half. Simply replace the mayonnaise, cream cheese, or sour cream in any dip for low fat plain Greek yogurt and you can reduce the calories per serving to only 50 calories or less. And because this swap doesn’t sacrifice the taste or texture of the dip, no one will miss the less healthy ingredients.
Slimmed Down Super Bowl Strategy #2: Sweeten Up Your Nachos
Nachos can certainly be a crowd pleaser, but the average nacho platter contains over 350 calories per serving (a serving is about 6-8 chips). When you think of nachos as commonly being served as the pre-meal appetizer, these excess calories can really add up. So why not put a healthy spin on the standard nacho? Sweeten your nachos up by making my simple Nutty Chocolate Apple Nachos which are sure to please your guests. This dessert nacho makes the perfect appetizer or sweet treat for your game day event. And the best part, its only 91 calories per serving!
Nutty Chocolate Apple Nachos
2 Tbs natural nut butter
1/8 cup dark chocolate chips
2 Tbs chopped walnuts
Arrange Brothers All Natural Fuji Apple Fruit Crisps on a large platter. Heat nut butter and chocolate in the microwave (or on the stove) until the consistency thins enough to drizzle over the apples. Drizzle the nut butter and chocolate evenly over the apples and top with chopped walnuts. Let stand at room temperature for 5-10 minutes to allow the chocolate and nut butter to harden slightly, then serve. This dish is best served within 10-20 minutes of assembly as freeze dried fruit becomes less crisp the longer it is exposed to air. (If the fruit is left out longer, it still tastes great, it just becomes less crisp)
